About me

Hi, I’m Amy and welcome to Couch Potato to World Getter!

After a trip with my kids to Butlins I was fed up with being fat, out of breath and having dreams that I was not chasing as I felt like stuffing my face on the couch or playing video games all day was much more enjoyable than actually living life. This was no way for an almost 40-year-old to live, especially when I felt like I hadn’t achieved anything!

I sat down and thought long and hard about what I wanted to do. One thing that has been a common theme throughout my life is the desire to travel. The problem was I nearly always lacked the money, time, and more recently health to be able to do so. Fear was always holding me back. I’m a single mum, with both me and my daughter, Erika, on the autism spectrum. Upping and leaving right now, when Erika still has therapy isn’t the best time to travel. Not to mention the fact I can barely walk anywhere or having the fear of being unable to fit places. Also my balance in my current account was at almost minus £100 and zero savings. To make my dreams to become reality I need a complete overhaul of my life!

Right now, that looks like small daily steps: improving fitness, paying off debt, saving for travel, and blogging honestly about the highs and lows along the way. Long-term, it means a once-in-a-lifetime trip around the world, visiting every country we can, with plenty of Disney stops and adventures in between! I wanted to document it all. Like a diary so I can see how far I have come and see how much I will evolve over time.

I do hope Erika will be joining me on this journey, as I plan to start when she finishes school. Although before that, I do plan on travelling locally and further afield. I have decided to include her in this process and prepare her for what lies beyond the 4 walls of our house, going out and enjoying life like a normal families do. This will occasionally take us out our comfort zones allowing us to grow, unlock new memories, and giving us the confidence to carry on.
